Report of our AGM on February 5th 2024

Audience watching a presentation: "What is a bike bus?"

We held our second Annual General Meeting last month. South Downs Social once again made us very welcome. We hope that the evening was informative and enjoyable.

The official minutes of the meeting can be downloaded here. Here is a brief summary of the event.

The formal agenda

Chair’s report: John Arthur presented a summary of his annual report for 2023, which can be read in full on the Cycle Winchester website here. We’ll feature John’s report in a subsequent article on this website.

Treasurer’s report: On behalf of our Treasurer, Mike Caldwell, who sent apologies, Rob Jordan presented a financial statement for the year-ending 31st December 2023, which can be found on the Cycle Winchester website here.

The financial statement was approved by the meeting with no objections.

Election of officers: John Arthur and Mike Caldwell kindly agreed to remain in post as Chair and Treasurer respectively, and were duly, unanimously re-elected. Rob Jordan stepped down after almost three years as Secretary. No candidates offered themselves for election as Secretary, so the post remains vacant, but there was an offer from a member to attend meetings of the core team with a view to becoming Secretary after a trial period.

Informal items

Chasing the Sun: This is a recently-premiered feature documentary, which includes footage of Cycle Winchester events and interviews with members of our core team. Phil Webb, the producer of the film, showed a trailer of the film, and gave short presentation highlighting some of its key messages. We hope to bring news of a Winchester screening in the late spring. Watch this space!

Winchester Movement Strategy: Stuck in first gear? Andy Key presented a critique of lack of progress on improving conditions for cycling over the six years since the Winchester Movement Strategy was initiated. Kelsie Learney responded on behalf of Winchester City Council. It was noted that Hampshire County Council, as transport authority, is best placed to deliver the improvements we are looking for, and we look forward to a constructive discussion with Nick Adams-King, portfolio holder for Transport in the HCC cabinet.

Quiz: Name that cycling city: Rob Jordan presented five short films representing cycling cities. For those who weren’t able to attend, why not take a look and see which you can identify? No prizes, but feel free to email us at hello@cyclewinchester.org.uk with your answers. We’ll return kudos!
