Cycle Winchester is thrilled to collaborate with the University of Southampton and The Winchester Gallery in a participatory exhibition: How to Draw a Bicycle.

The show runs from 6th July to 3rd August at The Winchester Gallery, situated on the west side of Park Avenue, SO23 8DL. Opening Hours are 12:00-18:00 Tue-Fri and 12:00-16:00 Sat.

From the gallery’s announcement of the show:

Do you remember the first time you, or someone you know, rode a bicycle? What does that memory look like? This summer, The Winchester Gallery features ‘How to Draw a Bicycle’, a participatory exhibition produced in collaboration with Cycle Winchester @cyclewinchester that brings artists into the gallery to offer hands-on opportunities for visitors to contribute to the exhibition. All ages are welcome to come and create work for the bicycle wall, recall a favourite cycling memory, be inspired by local creatives making hand-crafted bicycles and cycling-related artworks, and explore what cycling means to you.

‘How to Draw a Bicycle’ collectively shares our stories, memories, and reasons for riding with opportunities to create collaborative artworks that will grow slowly over the duration of the exhibition. From commissioned artists to drop-in workshops, the gallery space will be full of making and creating, supporting everyone to express their views and narratives around how, why and where we ride.

All are welcome to attend the launch event on Thursday 11th July from 5pm to 7pm.

Alongside the exhibition there will be a series of workshops:

  • 6-24 July – all day: Once Upon a Bike: sharing your first memories of cycling. What are your first memories of cycling? How did it make you feel? Come and share your stories with us throughout the exhibition, and on the 10th, 16th, 23rd and 24th of July watch artist Joe Ross create artwork in The Winchester Gallery inspired by YOUR contributions.
  • 19 July – 2-4pm: Collage Making Workshop: Come and see Winchester artist and graphic designer Neil Wyatt in the gallery and learn how to make collage work inspired by his prints.
  • 20 July – 11am-3pm: Printmaking workshop from a bike! Come and join Letterpress artist Nick Hand and make your own bookmark to take home. Nick and his printmaking bike are travelling around the UK in a unique creative adventure.

See you there!
