Join our 7th Mass Ride, 30 September: it’s Kidical!

A family riding bikes in the Cycle Winchester Mass Ride

Don’t miss the chance to be part of the largest annual gathering of ordinary cyclists on the streets of Winchester, from 10am on Saturday 30th September! It’s part of Winchester Green Week! And this year we ride in partnership with Kidical Mass!

We, the older generation, have suffered for decades with substandard cycling infrastructure, but we dare to dream of a better future for our children and grandchildren. Kidical Mass is a worldwide movement of cyclists from 0 to 99 years old, who take over the streets to reclaim the road space in colourful bicycle demonstrations. It’s seized the imagination, with over 150,000 riders joining 500 worldwide rides this year. Cycle Winchester has affiliated with Kidical Mass UK, and we share their vision of a future where all children and young people can safely and independently use cycles as a mode of travel.

Everyone is welcome to join our ride on September 30th. The more diverse our riders, bikes, ages and outfits the better! All you need is a working bike which you can happily steer, brake and pedal the length of your chosen route at a slow-medium pace.

As usual there are four main routes into the city all setting off promptly at 10am with pause/join points mid-way… all the details are here. Of course, anyone is free to find their own convenient place to join as one of the feeder rides passes en route to the city centre, or at King Alfred’s Statue roundabout after the rides merge.

Why not get a group of friends together that morning and plan a route that joins up with the Mass Ride?

Best of all do what the great folk in Colden Common and Twyford have done and publicise your arrangements for a feeder ride from where you live. If you can supply a map and timings, we will share that on our website and social media.

We always encourage bells, horns and whistles to create a good atmosphere. It’s an opportunity to carry a banner with a message. Here’s a few ideas to get you thinking …

Suggested slogans for the mass ride: Cycling for a cleaner city - 76 years old and still pedalling - It’s Better By Bike - E-bikes make it E-asy - More space for bikes! - Cycling: good for the soul - My first cycle into town - Safer streets now!

The ride ends with refreshments in Abbey Gardens and an opportunity to socialise and share experiences of the ride. If the weather looks good, maybe bring a picnic too!
